First Nations Fashion Design RECLAMATION! Case Study

Bake was was invited to support the RECLAMATION! fashion runway by First Nations Fashion Design with live switching and live streaming technical direction.

RECLAMATION was a dynamic evening bringing together wearables, textile art, dance and performance into powerful dialogue celebrating culture, Community, creativity and storytelling.

Featuring six First Nations designers – including Grace Lillian Lee, KingKing, MumRed and Merrepen Arts – alongside 24 Indigenous models and Blak back-of-house leadership, the experience platforms the people shaping the future of First Nations fashion. Reclamation includes exclusive costume works from Grace Lillian Lee’s collaboration for Flora, recently presented by The Australian Ballet in partnership with Bangarra Dance Theatre.

01. Pre-production

Bake worked closely with the events video production supplier Skrilled on developing an approach, technical testing and planning for the runway. Bake completed a venue recce and internet speed test of the venue to assess the technical requirements for a bonded internet service and robust streaming. Testing and set commenced two weeks prior to the event to allow for plenty of contingency and risk planning.

02. Solution

The project required a robust internet connection to ensure ‘up time’ with three (3) live camera feeds and an XLR audio feed needing to be managed and switched.

Bake supplied their ‘livestream’ fly away kit which included a Rodecaster Video switcher capable for ISO recording of each input, a production laptop and a three (3) connection bonded internet service (2x 5G + 1 Wifi internet connection) and a range of back up equipment in case of failure.

ISO recording was essential as Skrilled need to provide quick turn around edits the next day. Bake provide the ISO files and an .OTIO EDL file to allow for fast import, editing and grading in DaVinci Resolve.

03. The Result

The live stream was syndicated to multiple Instagram and Facebook accounts incl. Russh Magazine (216,000 followers), NIT Style Up (10,200 followers) and NatIndigTimes (46,100 followers) via the client supplied Restream service.

The ISO files were delivered the evening of the event for quick turn around edits.

Bake also completed and delivered a mastered cut of the event featuring and audio EQ and a vision color gradeto match the three (3) cameras and to also inject the excitement of the night via an ‘environmental’ audio track that captured the crowd reactions, claps, cheers and energy of the evening.
